A contingent of top shots from Caithness Small Bore Rifle Association led the way in the finals of the Lothian and Borders "World Cup" competition.

The event is run in a format similar to the football World Cup where competitors are drawn in leagues.

They complete a round-robin postal competition before the top-placed shooters in each group come together to finish the competition on a "shoulder-to-shoulder" basis.

This year Caithness had seven shooters in the finals from a total of 24, with other entrants coming from different parts of the UK.

After an afternoon of stiff competition, those qualifying for the semi-finalists all came from Caithness. They were David Bremner (Watten), David Simpson, Hugh Simpson (both Wick Old Stagers) and Robbie Campbell (Halkirk).

The eventual winner was David Simpson, edging out dad Hugh after a tie-break shoot-off. Robbie Campbell finished third, ahead of David Bremner.

Pete Richard (Pentland) was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

John and Sophie Campbell (Halkirk) also made the trip and were runner-up and semi-finalist respectively of the Bowl sub-competition after elimination from the main event.

The Bowl winner was Paul Duxbury (Chobham).

The Plate competition was won by Robin Thomson (Watsonians).

The "World Cup" was introduced to Lothian and Borders Target Shooting Association's competition programme in 1990. The venue was the Balerno and Currie club.
