Expansion masterplan next phase is unveiled

The latest phase of the revamp of John O’Groats unveiled features a mix of uses to boost trade at the tourist hotspot.

Outline planning consent is in place for the work, which proposes a high-level structure formed around a series of six zones in the village.

Development within each zone will take place as and when demand and investment is present.

They include a harbour front and public realm consisting of seafront with Last House, cafes, small retail, harbour and public areas.

A central core consists of mixed use development around a pedestrian square, including food and beverage, retail, small residential units, existing retail buildings retained and upgraded.

A Natural Retreats site consists of holiday accommodation and ancillary functions with public park and play area.

An artisans and craftsmen zone is also planned, with small artisan industrial units such as a ­micro-brewery, distillery, and weavers with community buildings such as a children’s centre and medical centre.

An events field with green space is planned for the centre of the village, suitable for large-scale community events as well as day-to-day recreation and potential pavilion building.

There will also be a residential quarter of family housing, detached cottages, villas and terraced houses market garden

The masterplan is being spearheaded by land owners Heritage GB and Natural Retreats.
