A CAITHNESS minister will have a zip in his step as he prepares for his latest fundraising venture.

The Rev Lyall Rennie, the Pentland parish locum minister, is to undertake a zip wire challenge in Aviemore next month to raise money for CrossReach, the social care department of the Church of Scotland. It operates residential care homes, provides counselling and support services and helps the homeless and people with learning and mental health issues.

He will be joined by his daughter, Izzy Cameron, who lives and works in Edinburgh. They will have to complete 14 zip wires over a distance of two kilometres, the longest being 550 metres.

The trip will take them through a pine forest and over a gorge and is expected to take about two-and-half hours to complete. The wires increase in length and height as they move through the course.

“I am looking forward to the challenge and to raising money to support CrossReach and hope between us we can raise over £600,” Lyall said.

Izzy said: “Every year dad enjoys a new challenge to raise funds for the very worthy cause CrossReach, which offers loving care to people of all ages in need of a helping hand, supporting them to live life to the full whatever their circumstances. CrossReach has been at the forefront of social care for 150 years.”

A coffee morning was held in Canisbay church hall in aid of Lyall’s zip wire challenge.

Those who complete the task will receive a certificate of bravery in the post.

Last summer, Lyall – who worked in the oil industry before becoming a minister – abseiled off the Forth Road Bridge to raise money for CrossReach.

In 2011, he abseiled from Dunrobin Castle and raised about £800 for charity.

He lives in Canisbay with his wife Isabel. The couple also have a son, Duncan, who lives in Ellon, Aberdeenshire.
