Caithness army veteran on NC500 fundraising trip

An ex-military man from Castletown is trekking around the NC500 as part of a fundraising bid to help homeless veterans.

Anthony Presley spent over 38 years in the army, with various tours abroad, and will be raising money for Help 4 Homeless Veterans through the Veterans Foundation.

He said: “I will be running/walking the North Coast 500, between May 5 and 23rd and covering between 25 and 39 miles per day.

“Throughout the 18 days, I will be carrying all my personal equipment that is needed.”

Jamielee Presley, Anthony’s daughter, said: “He’s always been very committed to the military and always very dedicated to his country.

“He has taken on this challenge to raise money for the Veterans Foundation to help homeless veterans and veterans who suffer from mental health issues. He came up with the idea to do it completely on his own a year ago and has trained for the past year to get himself ready.

“He’s 62 and retired and the challenge for him will be walking 500 miles around the north coast of Scotland on the NC500, completely unaided and alone.”

Jamielee said that everything he needs to complete the challenge he is carrying in his backpack.

“He set off this morning at 5am from Castletown and has already completed the first leg of his trip. His goal was to raise £1000, but just before he left, he completed that goal before even leaving, so we are all extremely proud of him.”

Jamielee added: “My dad is a very selfless man and doesn’t ever ask for a fuss, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve it. I think he needs to be recognised for his tremendous effort.”
