Members of the Caithness branch of Enable are all set for a 60th anniversary get-together in Wick this weekend – two years and nine months after their last function.

The afternoon tea party at Mackays Hotel will mark the start of a year-round programme of events, outings and activities organised by the charity for people with learning disabilities.

It was in January 2020 that Enable Caithness held its last function, weeks before the Covid pandemic began to take hold.

Branch chairman Willie Mackay said: "I'm proud of the branch reaching its 60th year and proud of the past and current voluntary management committee members who have always been there, dedicated to the cause of learning disability and to enhancing the lives of our members."

The branch started in October 1962 when a small group of parents met in former stables behind the Church of Scotland in Watten to gather ideas on how to improve facilities for children with learning disabilities.

Mr Mackay went on: "Enable Caithness receives no core funding whatsoever to help run the year-round events, and apart from our fundraising I am very proud of the generosity of the public who donate to our branch. All monies received are spent within the county.

"On Saturday afternoon we have around 85 members, helpers and carers from around Caithness attending the tea party in Mackays Hotel in Wick with music being provided by a long-time friend of the branch, Robin Young.

"It will be a great atmosphere with everyone back under the one roof again and seeing our members enjoying the excitement, fun and dancing."
