Caithness Honey buzzing after major national award

Caithness Honey proves it packs a sweet punch with more major accolades under its belt.

The product was shown at the UK National Honey Show for the first time in many years and local beekeeper Carol Gunn from Ackergill took home the cup for the best Ling Heather Sections on her first visit to the show.

The show is one of the major honey events in the world with over 2500 entries and 27 countries represented.

Carol said: "It was a great event. Seeing honey and hive products from so many nations was a real treat. I was absolutely delighted to win a trophy with Caithness Honey.”

The Ling Heather Honey was produced at Braehillor Dunbeath.

This is the second time the trophy for two Ling Heather sections has come to Caithness, the previous time was in 1991 when the late Bill Bruce, renowned Caithness beekeeper from Janetstown by Thurso, picked up the E Graham Burtt Silver Cup.

Carol added: "It was great to see Bill's name on the trophy. We don't produce a lot of honey in Caithness but what we do produce is of a very high standard and this is recognised at a UK level.”

Other prizes won by Carol at Sandown included third place for two jars of naturally set honey, fourth for a container of cut comb, fifth for two round sections and fifth for honey chocolates.

This is also the second major achievement for Carol this year having earlier been named as Britain's finest small-scale honey producer following judgement by honey experts from the British Beekeepers Association and Nigella Lawson.
