Caithness publisher commissions work by Wick poet
A Caithness book publisher has once again been awarded funding as a Book Week Scotland partner.
Crowvus is this year exploring the theme of Hope in respect to nature and says it is “delighted to be able to commission a beautiful poem” by Caithness poet, Jane Murton-Armer, as an answer to Emily Dickinson's Hope is the Thing With Feathers.
The publisher is looking for someone to translate the poem into sign language and hopes to have a recording to share on New Year's Eve.
Crowvus says: “We have also set up a Scottish nature writing quiz online which can be found at forms.gle/jC6BiSBvtvSpk4aU8 and has a prize of a £50 National Book Tokens gift card. The quiz is open until December 15, 2025, with a mixture of easy and crazily-tricky questions.
“We were hoping to do pavement art in Thurso but, for obvious reasons (snow) that wasn't going to work.”
Hope is Anchored Fast

Sunk in the dark of Caithness tides
Amidst its windswept shore,
There lies a hope that’s anchored deep
Though tempests often roar.
The wheel and cry of scorries swift
From cliff top plunge and falter,
Submerged within those mackerel seas
That anchor cannot alter.
Tis hope that weighs the anchor down
Our kith and kin prevailing,
Hope steers those periled vessels home
A top the lighthouse sailing.
