Caithness members of 7 SCOTS Army Reserves had their skills put to the test on a two-week exercise in the south of England.

Exercise Highland Fury 3 was conducted in two phases. The first week was a live-firing range package in Hythe which developed and tested marksmanship, tactical use of weapons and manoeuvre.

The second week consisted of a teaching phase on operating in built-up areas and was conducted in Imber village on Salisbury Plain. This ended in a confirmatory exercise, defending the village against an enemy force in a way that tested the reserves in all they had been taught.

Captain Martin J Macdonald, platoon commander for the Caithness reserves, said: "It was a rewarding and challenging fortnight which was enjoyable and beneficial to all who attended."

7th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, or 7 SCOTS, is the successor to the 51st Highland Regiment and has resumed training in Caithness after an absence of six years. Weekly training is taking place in Castletown, at the drill hut in Mackay Street.

7 SCOTS offers opportunities to develop fitness, learn new skills, acquire driving qualifications and take part in adventure training all over the world. Once qualified, opportunities also exist to train and deploy with the regular army if people wish to.

Anyone interested in joining the reserves or seeking further information can get in touch with Capt Macdonald on 07974 249340, to chat or arrange a visit. Further information can also be found at www.apply.army.mod.uk
