Castletown floral display will feature the colours of the Ukrainian flag
THE colours of the Ukrainian flag are to be represented in a floral display in Castletown. Yellow and blue flowers are to feature in one of six planters which are to be installed in the village by the community council.
The planters are to be put up in various areas to enhance the look of the place and make it more attractive.
At last week's community council meeting, Dave Bertram, who is helping to make the planters, said it was suggested that one of the boxes should contain a display in the colours of the national flag of Ukraine as a gesture of support for the country following its invasion by Russia.
Another of the planters will house red, white and blue flowers – the colours of the Union Jack – to celebrate the Queen's platinum jubilee to mark her 70 years on the throne.
Mr Bertram said the planters will be about the size of a small table and will be installed at their locations before the earth and compost in is put in. He also pointed out that it is hoped to involve the local primary school and youth club in the project which is expected to be completed next month. The words Castletown and Castletown: the Flagstone Village could be incorporated on some of the planters, it was stated.
Community council secretary, Liz Geddes, said: "You will need quite a lot of plants to fill the planters."

Vice-chairman, Colin Hossack, told the meeting it is planned to put the planters along the Main Street with one at the Thurso entrance to the village, another one about 100 yards away with the others near the war memorial and opposite Traill Street.
Mr Hossack stressed that if the project proves successful it could be extended with planters at the Wick and Dunnet entrances to Castletown as well.
The community councillors backed the project and agreed to consult with the Thurso Community Development Trust as it was involved in a similar initiative.
