Community advocate rolls out the barrel planters to bring colour to Thurso
A self-styled community advocate from Thurso is preparing to bring colour to the town in the shape of flower-filled barrel planters.
Alexander Glasgow has previously been involved in setting up flower baskets, positioning planters and tending to rose beds in Thurso town centre.
“I had noticed that the barrel planters in front of the war memorial were in need of replacement,” said Mr Glasgow.
“After the success of the community outreach section of NTRE Vulcan in replacing the flower boxes on in, I thought I'd try my luck with the spare barrels. Fortune favours the brave, after all.”
Mr Glasgow said that Vulcan has strong links to the armed forces, regularly supports military charities and “were totally up” for his plan.
“After confirming with Highland Council and Common Good, Legion ‘chiels’ cut them.

“Then Matthew from Wolfburn Distillery joined for their installation. One of the old barrels even had a label from the 20th century.”
Mr Glasgow says that with warmer weather coming in, he will paint and stain the barrels in time for the 80th Anniversary of VE Day and to pay homage to the over 200 men and one woman whose names are inscribed for posterity on the monument.
He has additional barrels which will go in front of the Royal British Legion (Scotland) Thurso branch next to River Thurso.
“Both they and Wolfburn are keen to promote their social value. I hope to secure more before the summer season to restock the burgh's barrels.
“I also am preparing the return of hanging baskets to Rotterdam Street on brackets fabricated by NTRE Vulcan apprentices, and the Olrig Street roses as well as investigating funding applications for very exciting wildlife/heritage sculptures.”
