A company that employs more than 30 people in Caithness has landed a major contract to supply CCTV systems to Royal Navy warships.

Imenco UK, which delivers marine and naval visual surveillance systems from locations in Aberdeen and Wick, won the contract from Babcock International Group.

The work involves providing CCTV systems for five of the Royal Navy’s Type 31 general purpose frigates being constructed at Babcock’s Rosyth facilities in Fife.

Imenco's operation in Wick was formerly known as Kongsberg Maritime and Osprey Electronics. There are 52 staff in Aberdeen and 32 in Wick.

David Fleming, marine and naval projects group manager at Imenco UK, said: “We are delighted to be able to leverage our expertise from similar CCTV systems in-service with international navies and apply it to the new Type 31 frigates.

"The system offers reliable, comprehensive surveillance and security around the ship while also integrating high-quality video streams to other key ship systems."

Imenco UK specialises in visual surveillance systems for harsh environments and is a world leader in the provision of both topside and subsea CCTV systems for naval surface ships and submarines.

Mr Fleming added: “This is a major contract win for Imenco in the UK and we’re delighted to be able to foster our relationship as a key supplier to Babcock International Group and the Royal Navy.”

The Type 31 frigates are part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy which is intended to transform naval shipbuilding in the UK. Imenco UK says that the frigate, based on Babcock’s Arrowhead 140 baseline design, "offers a modern, global platform that can be constructed efficiently and at a considerably lower cost than has previously been achievable, while offering a highly capable warship".

Imenco was established in 1979 and has its headquarters in Norway. It designs, develops and manufactures visual surveillance systems, helicopter fuel systems, diving systems, acoustic positioning systems, lifting and handling products, subsea corrosion protection, aquaculture products and subsea cameras, lights and lasers.
