Defective tyre charge against young Thurso driver is dropped

A young driver preparing to fight a defective tyre charge got an early and unexpected verdict.

It happened last week on the day of James Coghill’s trial. The 18-year-old had denied using his car with a tyre of less than the legal minimum of 1.6mm tread depth on January 15, on the A882, near Watten, contrary to the the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use Regulations) Act of 1986.

However, his solicitor, George Mathers, told Wick Sheriff Court that he had passed photo evidence of the tyre to fiscal depute Grant McLennan who would make a submission.

Mr McLennan said that he was dropping the case – leaving Coghill, of Lord Thurso Court, free to leave the dock.
