The four-vehicle accident closed the road for three hours on Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said four engines and crews responded to the crash.

"Hydraulic equipment had to be used to free one person from a car," she said.

"All persons were taken from their vehicles and were cared for by the ambulance service."

A silver Ford Focus, a maroon Toyota Starlet, a blue BMW 1 series and a green Ford Kuga were involved in the incident which was reported to the emergency services just before noon.

Two people – a man and a woman – were taken to Caithness General hospital in Wick but their injuries were not thought to be life threatening, according to a Police Scotland spokesman.

"A third car driver was treated at the scene."

He said the alert went out at 11.53pm. The road was closed for just over three hours but reopened at 3pm.
