Free cinema tickets on offer for all the family at Thurso this Sunday
Families in Caithness and north Sutherland are being invited to a special cinema screening – at no cost to them.
Escapes is a funded programme that offers free tickets to films across the country, and this Sunday it is coming to Thurso.
The offer allows families to see the funny and heartfelt animation The Sloth Lane ahead of its official release.
Since launching in February 2024, the initiative has seen more than 65,000 people across the UK access a range of independent films, from The Iron Claw starring Zac Efron to the Oscar-nominated Kneecap and the 90’s cult classic Point Break.
Backed by the BFI and National Lottery funding, Escapes will continue to bring fresh films to audiences every month in 2025, providing an opportunity for families to enjoy a cinematic adventure together at no cost.
Its first family friendly offering, Escapes will bring The Sloth Lane to cinemas nationwide on Sunday, February 9, ahead of the film’s official release on Valentine’s Day, February 14.
A speedy sloth named Laura and her kooky family move to the big city in their rusted old food truck, hoping to make their business a success. A coming-of-age tale that the whole family will love, the movie reminds the audience to appreciate the delicious, funny and wonderful parts of life, and to “season” the moment.
The Sloth Lane will be screened at Merlin Cinema in Thurso as a Sunday matinee, offering families a heartwarming escape from the winter chill with a perfect afternoon of cinema, the organisers say.

Bookings can be made for families of up to two adults and three children per order, without charge via escapes.cinematik.app.
Each free screening of The Sloth Lane will also feature descriptive subtitles to ensure it’s accessible to a wider audience. New films will be announced each month as part of the Escapes 2025 series.
Through free screenings at over 150 independent cinemas across the UK, Escapes aims to engage local communities and break down barriers to cinema-going.
