Halkirk hotel gives £200 donation to Northern Pilgrims' Way Group
A historical group highlighting the ancient paths of saints through Caithness has welcomed a £200 gift ahead of its most ambitious project to date.
The Northern Pilgrims' Way Group, which aims to re-establish the medieval pilgrimage route between Tain and Kirkwall, said it was delighted to receive the donation from the Ulbster Arms Hotel in Halkirk.
Jane Coll, a founder member of the group and its secretary, said: "As we are about to embark on our most ambitious project so far, this donation was well timed. Having achieved all the essentials, bar some more 'on-the-ground' signage, we are now turning our attention to raising the profile of the route.
"We decided that recreating the Skinnet and Ulbster carved stones and placing them as close as possible to their original settings would both achieve this and benefit the villages of Halkirk and Thrumster.
"We are starting with the Skinnet Stone and will be holding a consultation exercise in the Halkirk Heritage and Vintage Motor Centre on Saturday, November 26, from 1pm to 4pm. We hope that lots of people will call in to find out more about us and tell us what they would like us to include in our plans."
The group's website is http://www.northernpilgrimsway.co.uk and it also has a Facebook page.
The Northern Pilgrims’ Way Group is chaired by Councillor Karl Rosie.
