Halkirk United’s £500 donation to mental health charity Mikeysline
A Highland mental health charity and a cancer support centre in Thurso are the first good causes to benefit from a fundraising draw launched last year by Halkirk United.
A £500 cheque for Mikeysline was handed over on Saturday at the Anglers’ home ground, Morrison Park, before their top-of-the-table clash with Invergordon in the North Caledonian League.
A further £500 will go to the North Highland Cancer Information and Support Centre.
Halkirk United started a 150 club in January 2024 to help generate money for the club. Members pay a monthly fee and are entered into a regular draw for cash prizes.
The idea is that half the money taken in over the year will go out in prizes and donations.

Mikeysline representative Donna Murray accepted the cheque which was handed over by Halkirk United players Murray Mackay and Stewart Atkins.
Mikeysline CEO Emily Stokes said: “Having the support of local clubs like Halkirk United is a wonderful way to highlight the strong links between physical activity and positive mental health.
“As a grassroots charity, this incredible donation will bring a brilliant boost to our services which serve as a lifeline to so many who are struggling with their mental health, anxiety, depression and/or suicidal thoughts.
“It’s also important to add that this money will stay locally, ensuring we are here to support those in Halkirk and the surrounding Caithness communities.”
Halkirk United chairman Willie Campbell said: “We decided at the start that we were going to give two charity donations, so this is the first one.
“We want to help the community and help the whole of Caithness.”
The club’s manager, Ewan McElroy, added: “We’re a community club and I think it’s important that we try to help out when we can.”
The cheque for North Highland Cancer Information Centre in Thurso will be presented at a later date.
