John O'Groats Mill tours feature on Doors Open Day programme
A CHANCE to tour the historic John O'Groats Mill is on offer later next month – possibly the last opportunity for visitors to see it before restoration work begins.
Normally the mill is closed to the public but the John O'Groats Mill Trust has been given permission to allow access as part of Doors Open Day, an annual event which runs in Scotland throughout September.
The mill, almost certainly the last water-powered grain mill to be built in Scotland and which passed down through many generations of the Houston family, is open on Saturday, September 21, and Sunday 22nd, from 11am to 4pm.
There are a number of other local buildings throwing their doors open to the public during the month.
- Berriedale Church on September 15, from 10am until 4pm.
- The Environmental Research Institute in Thurso on September 14, between 10am and 2pm, tours only.
- Mary Ann's Cottage in Dunnet on September 14 and 15, between 2pm and 4.30pm.
- Old St Peter's Kirk in Thurso on September 14 and 15, from noon to 3pm.
- St Peter and the Holy Rood Episcopal Church in Thurso from 10am to 4pm on September 14, and 11.30am to 4pm the next day.
- Waterlines Visitor Centre in Lybster on September 14 and 15, between 11am and 5pm.
- Wick Heritage Museum on September 29, from 10am to 5pm.
