Litter pickers get busy at Wick riverside for the start of 2023
A local initiative to keep Wick's riverside free from rubbish got off to an early start in 2023 with volunteers turning up yesterday (January 2) to help tidy the area.
Wick Riverside Volunteers conducted a litter pick on January 2 starting at the fountain around 11am and working around the area for some time.
A group spokesperson said: "The litter pick was very successful, indicative of the fantastic community spirit we have here in Wick.
"Over 20 people of all ages, including from the Wick Paths Group, took time out of their day to come along. We separated the litter into recyclable and non-recyclable as much as possible and the Highland Council, who also supplied us with equipment, will collect the bags in the next couple of days."
The council also provided the volunteers with a bin to take everything away.
"It’s a great way to start the new year and to help keep the riverside a beautiful place," said the spokesperson.
John Bogle from Wick Paths Group said: "A big thank you to all the Wick Paths Group members who came along today to help the Riverside Volunteers with their litter pick at the riverside – what a great turnout. A real difference was made on both sides of the river."
