Man drove car towards parking warden in Wick after ticket issued

An elderly West Murkle man resented having been issued with a parking ticket and threatened the traffic warden who issued it saying: “You people should clearly be shot.”

James Bremner’s behaviour, which also included driving at speed in the warden’s direction, cost him a £600 fine and six penalty points.

The man challenged the warden over the ticket issued to him.

Bremner (74) drove up at the Riverside car park in Wick and challenged the warden over the ticket issued earlier in the day, on June 19, last year.

Fiscal depute Grant McLennan told Wick Sheriff Court on Tuesday: “The accused was angry and a member of the public heard him shouting aggressively at the warden. The warden walked away and Bremner drove halfway up Maclay Lane, did a U-turn and drove up and down at high speed, his tyres screeching.

“He drove in the warden’s general direction, stopped and threatened the warden through an open car window. The warden was shaken. A member of the public observed Bremner driving off at a fast and erratic speed.”

Police officers reviewed CCTV footage in the area before visiting Bremner at his home at West Murkle, where he was cautioned and charged.

Fiona MacDonald said that the incident had caused Bremner “a great deal of worry and stress”.

The solicitor appealed to Sheriff Sara Matheson not to disqualify her client as he lived two-and-a-half miles from public transport and had a summer job.

Bremner admitted abusive behaviour and careless driving and was given a month to pay the fine.
