Our Wee Shop at Westfield travelled back in time to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe last Thursday.

As owner Lorna Mackenzie explained: “We thought it would be nice to have some vehicles of that era, so very kindly some locals brought along their 1940s war and vintage vehicles to view - Jason Gell brought along his wartime Willys Jeep, John and Gary Mackay brought an ex army Hugglund and trailer, Joe Mackay brought his International tractor and plough, Nicol Mackenzie took his Grey Ferguson tractor, Les Bremner took his Triumph Stag, plus many other classic cars arrived throughout the event, which we greatly appreciated.

“Our staff, myself included, dressed up in 1940s attire. I was an RAF sergeant, we had the Lands Girls and our very own Vera Lynn.

“We decorated the shop and garden centre with red, white and blue colours. We held a two-minute silence at 12pm to remember all the war heroes, gone but most definitely not forgotten.”

Customers were able to enjoy free teas and coffees on the day and there was even a 1940s-themed quiz and music.

“It was a marvellous day and very well supported,” Lorna added. “We plan to have a similar event for VJ Day in August.”
