A ROSS-SHIRE pub and eatery has put out a red hot challenge to foodies.

On Hallowe’en night, The Anderson in Fortrose will host their 2nd annual Chilli Con Carnage, when the area’s best professional and home cooks will enter their favourite chilli to compete for top honours.

Everyone is invited to enter a batch of their own chilli into the competition. Any style may be entered, meat or vegetarian, beans or beanless, there are no limits on the chilli recipe, which will be judged blind by a panel of chilli experts from the Highland food trade.

The £3 entry fee for each chilli entered will benefit the British Heart Foundation Scotland.

"Chilli is one of those kitchen-sink dishes," said The Anderson’s chef and co-owner, Anne Anderson.

"Yes, there are expected flavours and textures, but you would be amazed at some of the things I’ve seen people throw into their pot."

Husband Jim Anderson said: "These Chilli Cook-Offs are really popular community events in America. You Simpsons fans will remember in season eight when Homer tucked in to Chief Wiggum’s special chilli and went insane briefly in a capsicum-induced hallucination. Believe me, they weren’t making that up!"

Anyone is welcome to enter a chilli into the The Anderson Cook-Off. Mexican-themed fancy dress is encouraged, and everyone in attendence will get samples of the competing chillis. Full details of the cook-off rules can be found on The Anderson’s Website, www.theanderson.co.uk

Originally from the United States, Jim and Anne Anderson have been running The Anderson since 2003.
