PICTURES: Community shows its love for Dunnet forest with ‘green hearts’

Dunnet Climate Cafe (DCC) organised a special event at the weekend for local people to show their love for the community forest at Dunnet.

Su Edwards and other DCC members set up a trail of ‘green hearts’ in Dunnet Forest and asked those attending the event to make their own green hearts out of natural materials to “show the love for our wonderful community forest and for nature”.

“We had about 60 hearts made of wood, wire, wool, cardboard, willow, and slate,” added Su.

A Climate Cafe is a welcoming, informal pop-up space in a community – or a workplace, campus or school – to get people together to chat and act on climate change.

Contributors at the event included Castletown Primary School and local residents along with DCC members. “On Saturday, we asked people visiting the forest to write what they like about the forest on paper hearts and these are displayed in the roundhouse.”

Some of the comments included, “I love to be among the big tall trees”; “all the birds”; “the smell of pine wood”; and “l love the trees, the moss, the puddles and the air”. The green hearts are part of a Climate Coalition project across the whole of the UK to encourage people to talk about nature and to encourage them to conserve and restore it.

DCC meet once a month to talk about climate issues, share successes and information and take action individually or together.

“Thanks to the Dunnet Community Forest for help and encouragement,” said Su.
