Lybster had a day of fun and laughter as many turned out in the sunshine to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Members of Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Community Council (LLCCC) helped organise the event, which saw over 300 people turn out to enjoy a day of entertainment along with a tea party.
Paul Gibson was one of the LLCCC organisers and said: “What a fantastic day for Lybster’s VE 80 Day. Thank you to Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Halsary Fund for funding it.
“Many, many thanks also to Wick Royal British Legion Scotland Pipe Band for starting our day off with a parade down the high street and playing throughout the day. They finished off with a march back up the main street.”
Wick and East Caithness councillor Jan McEwan attended the event and said: “When I arrived the sun was shining and the party was in full swing.
“Everyone I spoke with said they were having a brilliant time. The pipe band was playing, dancers dancing, helpers serving loads and loads of refreshments – all in all, an amazing success. Lybster did Caithness proud with their VE celebrations.”
Local kids dressed up as mascots, and Paul said that members of Tanya Horne’s dancing school “were absolutely fantastic”.
DJ Ness provided additional music, and Caithness Community Connections had children's games, sandwiches and created a poppy display.

Lybster Primary School helped out with bunting and cakes. Tesco Wick, Forse of Nature, Lybster Day Centre, Lybster Village Cafe, Caithness Animal Farm Park, Mshed and local residents were thanked for giving prizes, sandwiches, and baking.
Paul also sent a debt of gratitude to all the volunteers who helped on the day and who gave up their time to help plan it. “They worked so hard in the lovely heat,” he added.
Many crafters had their creations for sale, and there was a raffle for Poppy Scotland. “The winners’ names will be posted in the local shop and on Facebook, and we will contact everyone. We raised £333.54 on the day.
“What a great turnout and success. There were lots of great messages on Facebook and feedback from the villagers as well.”
The event was part of a nationwide celebration to mark the end of World War Two.
