PICTURES: Thurso Fun Day event raises over £1000 for sick kids
A special day of fun, football and live music at Naver Park in Thurso on Saturday raised £1042 for Great Ormond Street Hospital (Gosh), said the organisers.
Tracy Gillespie and Kane Cameron hosted the event which included a seven-a-side football tournament on the all-weather pitch along with stalls and games for kids in an adjoining hall called the E'shed and sessions from various local musicians in a small marquee outside.
Tracy said: “It was very successful day all in all with the Pique Blinders beating RB Leibster in the final to win the spoils.
"Pique Blinders kindly donated their winnings back to Gosh – massive thanks to Bob Gunn, Graham Witson and James Ross for giving up their time to referee the games for charity. Also thanks to all the volunteers who helped out and for everyone who came along to support the big day.”
The E'shed hall had many fun activities for the kids and other visitors could buy items at the various stalls which included baking from Stacks and the creations of young Lybster business owner, Mhairi Kirk. The 10-year-old entrepreneur runs a specialist company called MK Melts making candles and wax melts – scented pieces of wax without a wick that are melted to release home fragrance.
Talking about her business operation, Mhairi said: "Mum will take photos of me for Facebook and people will think 'Oooh, I'd like them'. Then they buy them and we then deliver them to Wick and Thurso."
Speaking on Saturday afternoon, Kane Cameron, organiser and football player in the seven-a-sides, said: "We started off pretty strong with all the football teams paying their entry fees, so that was a £500 minimum before we even started the day. If we make over £1000 we'll be happy.
"We've been really lucky and only had a couple of showers. There were kids activities in the E'shed with face painting and the bouncy castle, we've got live music next to the shed and then we've got the football tournament going on until about 4pm."
Musicians at the event included Andy MacLeod, Colin Manson, Donald McNeill and Adam Wares from Caithness indie sensations OpenPlan.
The organisers said they were particularly delighted to break their £1000 target amount for the hospital charity.
