PICTURES: Wild boar herd roaming around Camster area

After a single wild boar went on the run in Caithness back in December, a herd of the animals was spotted in the Camster area this morning (March 26).

Caroline Window, who lives in the Camster area, took the pictures featured here showing a group of the animals appearing quite docile as they search for food along the roadside.

Caroline said: “They were by us, but we were heading to Lybster so we couldn’t stop them.

“I have no idea whose they are but I guess they may have been dumped at Camster.”

A so-called ‘wild boar’ was on the loose in the Caithness countryside and appeared in the Bilbster area of the county in December last year.

The roaming mammal was then seen around Bower before making his way to land on Bilbster Mains Farm where he was captured on video by local man David Anderson who posted footage on Facebook.

The animal was later captured near Watten after roaming around the village hall.

Wild boars are common on mainland Europe, with an estimated population of several million. If you encounter a wild boar, the best advice is to move away slowly in the opposite direction and keep dogs well away.

Numerous reports have appeared in the media of feral pigs roaming around the Scottish Highlands that can be over 100kg in weight and reach speeds of around 20mph.
