THURSO’s name-check on the BBC Scotland spoof cop show Scot Squad has led to a portrait of one of its main characters winging its way to the far north.

The picture was seen in the fly-on-the-wall comedy series in a recent episode and will soon be displayed in the town’s station.

In the opening episode of the second series last month, the squad’s Chief Commissioner Cameron Miekelson – played by actor Jack Docherty – has his portrait painted “to inspire the men”.

But he is far from impressed when he sees the finished abstract work and decides it could provide inspiration “in the Thurso station or something”.

The reference to Caithness prompted staff at the station to get in touch with the BBC Comedy Unit, which produces the show, to request the painting.

The Comedy Unit executive producer Rab Christie said: “We’re sad to see the oil painting go, but we’re delighted Thurso police station got in before the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh called up.”
