THE main A882 was blocked for more than an hour on Monday evening when a Stagecoach service bus caught fire near the junction with the A9 at Roadside.

Traffic in both directions was brought to a standstill as large plumes of smoke and flames belched from the rear of the Wick-bound bus.

After detecting a problem, the driver had brought the single decker to a halt at the roadside about 6.15pm and he and the passengers safely got out before the outbreak took root.

Firefighters from Thurso and Wick used hosereel jets to put out the blaze and ensured there was no risk to the diesel tank of the bus before re-opening the road.
