Talk by renowned New York artist in Wick
A WORLD famous New York artist, currently in Wick, will give a free talk on his work in Mackays Hotel on Sunday (August 4).
Don Perlis is an established figure on the New York art scene whose paintings can be found in most public collections in America. His recent work has been described by critics as "like a garish, candied wonderland" that is "bright and appealing, even seductive". The visions he creates are often sardonic parodies of contemporary American life. Several of his works are also currently being exhibited in the Caithness Artists show in Thurso by special invitation.
Another series of works, based in and around the New York subway system, have a disturbing undercurrent as Perlis recorded the everyday violence that occurred during the 70s and 80s, such as the Bernard Goetz shooting of four black men near Union Square.
Mr Perlis is staying in Wick during August and will be painting around the town while in residence.
Wick artist Ian Charles Scott, invited Mr Perlis over and will introduce him on the evening. "The event should prove an interesting and rare chance for the public to meet and talk to a leading established member of the New York art scene," said Mr Scott.
The event is free, open to all and takes place at 8pm on Sunday, August 4 in Mackays Hotel.
