A large power cut has left hundreds of Caithness homes without electricity on Good Friday.

The outage, which was affecting around 730 homes and businesses in the Thurso, Castletown and Dunnet area, occurred shortly before 8.30am.

Confirming the outage, a spokesperson for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said: "We're aware of a power cut... affecting 730 homes.

"This unplanned fault is affecting the local area, and it's likely several streets in the area are affected by the same power cut.

"We have engineers ion the way and they are due to arrive in your local area at 9am.

"Once they arrive, they will get straight to work on investigating the fault and attempt to restore your power.

"At this stage, we're aiming to have your power restored by 11.30am," they added, although as engineers were not yet on site at the time of the statement, this time could slip depending on how work progresses.

SSEN continued: "We have had to isolate power due to a safety concern on our network.

"Where possible, we will always try to keep the power on, however, there are situations like this where we need to isolate the power to keep people safe.

"There is no concern for safety [at your properties], however there is an isolated issue elsewhere our teams need to make safe before they can turn power back on."

Anyone requiring more information can call SSEN on 105 quoting reference 'QT5856' or by visiting powertrack.ssen.co.uk.
