Thurso band Forgetting The Future set for tour of Ireland

A Thurso band hope they can be a driving force for the modern Caithness music scene as they head overseas for their first tour of Ireland.

Forgetting The Future has announced three high-profile gigs in Dundalk (County Louth), Belfast and Dublin next month in what it says is a “major leap” for the band.

The indie rock four-piece has been gaining momentum across the UK, having played sell-out shows across Scotland as well as at Belladrum and the Isle of Wight festivals.

Lead vocalist Robbie McNicol said: “This is a dream come true for us. Touring Ireland feels like a massive step, not just for our band but for Caithness as a whole. We’ve been working towards this moment for years, and we can’t wait to see how Irish audiences respond to our music.”

The tour will be an opportunity for the band to showcase their latest material, including new singles Catacombs, Have you Settled? and Chemtrails, that highlight their unique blend of indie rock, soaring melodies, and storytelling drawn from their Highland upbringing.

As well as singer Robbie, Forgetting The Future is made up of Sam Cowan (drummer), Max Paul (bassist) and Jamie Mackay (lead guitarist).

The band is hoping that the tour helps bring attention to music from outside the central belt and say they are “eager to carry the banner for Highland musicians and artists who are often overshadowed by larger cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh”.

“This Ireland tour is not only a personal achievement for Forgetting The Future but also an opportunity to raise awareness of the untapped musical talent in Caithness,” said Robbie.

“Known for its rugged landscape and strong sense of community, the area has nurtured the band’s sound, inspiring their music with themes of ambition and resilience. Through their music, Forgetting The Future is leading a cultural charge that could put Caithness on the map as a new source of indie rock talent.”

They want to prove that even a small town like Thurso can produce music with international appeal.

Already, they have collaborated with renowned producer Ken Allardyce, who has worked with the likes of Green Day, Fleetwood Mac and Weezer.

They have now teamed up with a local firm, Dunnet Bay Distillers, whose Rock Rose Gin is supporting them on their Ireland tour. The partnership represents a “perfect synergy” between two prominent local entities, according to the band.

Martin Murray, co-founder of Dunnet Bay Distillers based in Castletown, explained that the company was helping to support them with the tour.

“We’re passionate about Caithness and helping talented people from the area is something we’re keen to build on,” he said. “We saw them for the first time at Belladrum this year and were blown away!”

Robbie added: “We’re thrilled to have Rock Rose Gin supporting us on this tour. It’s great to see a local business backing local music, and it really feels like we’re representing Caithness as a whole when we hit the road.”

The tour kicks off on November 14 at the Spirit Store in Dundalk, followed by a performance at Oh Yeah Music Centre in Belfast on November 15, and concludes with a show at Sine-E in Dublin on November 16.
