It might have been a dirty day in terms of the weather, but that didn't prevent Thurso's public-spirited firefighters getting together to keep everyone's vehicles clean and shiny.

The fire station's car wash on Saturday raised almost £1890, with all the proceeds going to the Fire Fighters Charity which supports the mental, physical and social needs of all serving and retired members of "the UK's fire family".

Fourteen members of the crew turned out in a constant downpour and got to work with their buckets, sponges and hoses. A steady stream of vehicles called by between 10pm and 4pm and all emerged looking as good as new.

Firefighter Mark Budge owns AutoLux Detailing Solutions and he donated the cleaning products. There was a raffle with two bottles of Wolfburn whisky as prizes, and the crew received three large cash donations – from Bank of Scotland's Caithness branches, Meiklejohn's Taxis and Stephen Bremner of Ashley Ann.

The station posted a message thanking the public and saying: "After a very wet and miserable day and a fantastic effort by the crew we are delighted to announce that we have raised £1888.83 for the Fire Fighters Charity."
