Thurso school pupils learn about 2004 tsunami
P6 pupils at Pennyland Primary have been learning about natural disasters, hearing from someone who knows about them all too well.
Looking into the tsunami that struck regions around the Indian Ocean 20 years ago this year pupils were very lucky to have a visit from Julie Murray from Wick, a survivor of the 2004 disaster.

Julie shared her story with yojngsters about the beauty of Sri Lanka – the country she was visiting at the time - her experience of being woken up by the noise of the tsunami and the kindness of the local people in Mirissa village who helped her and her partner, Steve, to safety, providing them with food and water in the aftermath.
The children asked lots of questions and were very grateful to Julie for sharing her experiences with them.
