Thursonian Weedbusters on the move

A GROUP of volunteers in Thurso are making great improvements to the town centre with their war on weeds.

Community activist Alexander Glasgow started Thursonian Weedbusters to tackle the burgeoning problem of invasive weeds and got to work with a core membership of around half a dozen.

"The idea arose with a group of us including Donald and Maureen Sinclair," Alexander said.

"We were aware weeds were running riot – no disrespect to roads or gardening services, who are operating on reduced staff and other restrictions.

"Several staff continue to assist in their own time, and special uplifts and delivery of wheelie bins have been arranged."

So far the Esplanade steps and much of the Esplanade itself have been cleared, together with the Olrig Street rose garden.

Weeding between the roses presented no thorny issues to the team.

"The response, both from passers-by and on social media, has been overwhelming with offers of help as well as home baking.

"Suggestions of other areas, such as certain parts of the cemetery, have been made to me."

Alexander said that local boatmen had also cleared the harbour area.

"It is a task we all have enjoyed carrying out, and should like to continue in some form when these crazy times settle. There is going to be a re-ordering of the way council services are provided with, no doubt, emphasis on community involvement."

He emphasises that Thursonian Weedbusters is not related to any other group in the area but updates can be found on the Thurso Community Noticeboard page on Facebook.
