Vandalism is senseless
Sir – As a child, I spent many happy hours at the Battery at Castlehill looking for Groatie buckies and exploring rock pools. It is gratifying to see that many families still do this.
As an amateur naturalist in my sixties, I often walk along the shore from Castlehill to Murkle Bay. This area is a stretch of coastline with a rich variety of wildlife which should be a source of pride.
Unfortunately and regrettably, not everyone shares this view nor do they appreciate or value this area. I refer to the flytippers. As I was going for a walk on Friday, February 14, I came across a washing machine dumped at the side of the track. It had been recently dumped because the tyre tracks of the vehicle used were clearly visible on the grass.
This kind of vandalism makes me angry but also puzzled. Why, when we have excellent facilities for disposing of unwanted household goods, would someone do this? Surely it would have needed little more effort to take the item to the recycling centre?
I’ve racked my brains for a reason and the only one I can come up with is that there are people in Caithness who hate the county so much that they want to turn it into a rubbish dump.
