Vaping banned in three Thurso pubs

A NUMBER of pubs and cafes in Thurso have banned the use of e-cigarettes and other vape devices inside their premises.

Vaping is no longer permitted in the Comm Bar, Top Joe’s, Caffe Cardosi and the Holborn Hotel.

The devices can be used inside public premises with the proprietor’s permission unlike the legislation in 2006 which imposed a wholesale ban on smoking cigarettes.

Comm Bar and Top Joe’s owner Scott Youngson said he hs taken the step due to complaints from customers and members of staff.

He said vapers would now have to go to designated smoking areas.

He said: “Some of the vapes people are using are very pungent.

“It has got almost as bad as cigarette smoke that is lingering in the bar and it has resulted in complaints from customers.

“Members of my staff said they were getting headaches due to the smell so we thought it was time to knock it on the head.

“There are a lot of people who do not enjoy the smell of the vapers as they come in various flavours.”

Pubwatch Thurso is set to hold a meeting on Tuesday when members will discuss the ban being introduced to all pubs and hotels in the town.

While still legal in Scotland, Mr Youngson believes it will only be a matter of time before it is banned in public premises across the country.
