Wick's first and only female firefighter is leaving the service after 18 months with the crew.

Abbie Douglas has decided to take a two-year break from life in Scotland and move to Banff in Alberta, Canada, where, among other things, she plans on perfecting her snowboarding skills.

She says she has enjoyed being part of the Wick crew and expects to rejoin the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on her return – unless life has other unforeseen plans in store.

Abbie worked right up to the last minute of her service as a firefighter – her presentation had to be interrupted as she and the rest of the crew were called out to a false alarm in the town's Seaforth Avenue, on Thursday evening.

Watch officer Colin Gunn presented her with an engraved plaque to mark her 18 months' service.
