The organisers of Wick Gala Week have been praised by the town's community council for doing "an excellent job".

The gala returned this summer for the first time since before the pandemic. It began with the crowning of the gala queen and the procession of decorated floats, and culminated in the traditional bonfire and fireworks on Saturday night – with a packed programme in between.

At the August meeting of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council, held on Monday night, chairperson Joanna Coghill said: “Well done to the gala committee. They did an excellent job.

“There was a lot of commitment by a lot of volunteers and it was a team effort.”

Community councillor Allan Bruce also acknowledged the support given by local businesses, adding: “It catered for all ages.”

Some events had been held virtually for two years during Covid restrictions but this was the first full gala since 2019.

More than £13,000 has been taken in, with the final tally still to be confirmed.

Gala committee chairman Alex McDonald said at the weekend: "The feedback we've been getting has all been positive. It went really well and it was a great success."
