THE greatest darts player to have ever come from Caithness will be remembered at the county’s biggest darts tournament.

More than 170 throwers from across the country will be in Wick for the third annual Harper’s Darts Weekend, starting tonight.

This year’s event honours the memory of Angus Ross who passed away in January.

The 62-year-old competed at the BDO World Championship in the early 1980s, won the Scottish championship in 1979 and represented Scotland in the Home Nations Cup, European and World championships.

Rab Smith, who was also in the Home Nations Cup-winning team, will be at this weekend’s event along with Mr Ross’ widow Marina to present the trophies in two new male and female memorial competitions.

The action at Harper’s Bar kicks off tonight with a mixed pairs’ competition followed by the singles on Saturday and pairs Sunday.

Prizes of £1500 will be given to the winners of the singles and £1000 to the pairs’ winners. Last year’s men’s and women’s champions Cameron Menzies and Christine Hyde are both defending their titles.

Menzies, from Ayrshire, is the hot favourite to regain his title after he won the UK Open, beating Richard Veenstra from Holland 6-1 in the final after earlier accounting for BDO World darts champion Scotty Mitchell and Scott Waites.

Scottish international Craig Quinn, from Falkirk, is also expected to mount a serious challenge given he tops the BDO averages and won the pairs last year with Malcolm Begg with whom he is again to partner.
