Caithness juniors perform well at Wishaw tournament
Three Caithness junior badminton squad members travelled to Wishaw on Saturday to take part in the Scottish Schools Badminton Union 2013 age-group tournament.
Liam Sinclair (Wick), Sophie Mackay and April Steven (both Dunnet) all played well, gaining valuable experience with lots of games.
In the boys’ singles, Liam topped his group after winning all three of his matches and dropping only 40 points.
To secure his place in the play-off, he played Joshua Gajri (Lothian) and won 21-16, 21-12. His semi-final was against top seed Saathvik Karthik Saravanan (Lothian), with Liam taking it to three sets before Saarthvik came out on top 21-8, 13-21, 21-10.
Number two seed Sophie Mackay won all her games in her group in the girls’ singles, dropping only 35 points over the three games.
In the semi-final of the main draw she beat Bhanu Duvvuri (Lothian) 21-18, 21-13, giving her a place in the final against Lothian’s Anvita Awasthi, with Anvita winning 21-8, 21-11.
April performed well in the group stages and in the consolation play-off she met Ella Luo, with Ella taking the win 21-4, 21-4.
Liam played with Nicholas Wong (Lothian) as a scratch pairing in the boys’ doubles. The doubles were played in a round-robin format, with Liam and Nicholas winning two of their four games – meaning they won the consolation.
Sophie played with Anvita Awasthi in the girls’ doubles and they won all their games in the round-robin, so they were the winners.
Kerry Mackenzie, of Caithness Junior Badminton Club, said: “Well done to all three of them for taking part and performing so well.”
