Delight at Wick Amateur Swimming Club successes
Wick Amateur Swimming Club captains Nebi Senguler and Eva Robertson both had something to celebrate at this month’s North District Open Championships.
Nebi and Eva were representing not only their club but the Highland Swim Team performance squad. Nebi gained six personal bests as well as reaching a final, while Eva achieved five PBs and made it to two finals.
She also received the North District junior champion trophy for her efforts at 200m breaststroke.
The championships followed on from the University of Aberdeen open meet last month, with Rona Taylor and Eva Robertson representing WASC.
Rona was successful in securing four PBs, while Eva came home with five PBs and four medals – bronze in 100m free, silver in 200m IM and gold in both her 100m IM and 100m breaststroke.
September had been a particularly busy month, with club members attending meets across the north.
Jackson Lunn, along with Eva and Nebi, attended the North District Sprint Championships in Aberdeen, where every event is 50m apart from the individual medley which is 100m.
All managed to make it into the finals, with Eva placing second for silver in 50m breaststroke and Nebi having a clean sweep of gold medals for each stroke, including 100m IM.
Thurso Amateur Swimming Club’s open meet was next and 10 swimmers represented WASC: Davie Swanson, Rona Taylor, Mikolaj Hutny-Wojcicki, Holly Hanrahan, Paige Ronaldson, Eva Forbes, Tyler Ronai, Jackson Lunn, Jack Angus and Aiden Inrig.
This was Rona’s first competitive meet since March following her return to swimming after a shoulder injury. She had a brilliant meet, not only managing to take time off several swims but taking home fourth-place ribbons in 100m fly, free and breast.
Davie also placed fourth in 100m and free and won a bronze medal for his 100m backstroke. Jack placed second, third and fourth in his 50m breast, free and fly respectively.
Tyler placed fourth in his 50 fly and Eva Forbes secured silver for her 100m breast. The girls had a great relay, taking second place and well-deserved silver medals.
The end of the month saw the Wick club split between Buckie and Forres with Mikolaj Hutny-Wojcicki, Davie Swanson, Alex Richard and younger sister Carey travelling to Buckie for a long-distance meet, while Jack Angus, Morven Begg and Paige Ronaldson took part in the Forres Bluefins’ mini meet.
Buckie proved to be a challenging meet with events covering 200m and 400m distances.
Alex came away with four medals – silver in 200 breaststroke and IM, as well as silver in his 400 free, while bronze was the order of the day for his 200m backstroke.
Davie took third place and bronze in both 200 breast and IM, with a silver for 200 back as well as a clean sweep of PBs.
Although no medals were to come home with her, Carey had a PB so it was a worthwhile trip along the Moray coast.
Moving on to Forres, aside from some impressive PBs – which are important for the highly competitive club PB league – Jack had a successful meet and took home bronze in both 50 back and 50 free, followed by silver in both 50m breast and 50m fly.
August had seen eight of the younger swimmers cross the Pentland Firth for the Pentland Pentaqua in Stromness. WASC secured a clutch of medals as well as many PBs.
Jack Angus won a silver medal for his 50m breaststroke, while Jackson Lunn took home a silver medal for his efforts in his 100m breaststroke and gold in 100m free, 50m butterfly and 200m IM.
Younger brother Leighton Lunn was delighted to win gold in both his 25m butterfly and his 100m IM.
Alex Richard secured silver medals in his 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 200m IM, and gold in both his 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke. Carey also celebrated with a bronze medal for her 50m butterfly.
Other swimmers who made the trip were Morven Begg, Eva Forbes and Mikolaj Hutny-Wojcicki, all managing to return home with PBs in different swims.
Siony Mackintosh, poolside helper and trainee coach, said: “It has been a busy few months for our swimmers and we are delighted with not only the commitment they show in training, but also in the successes they are seeing at all levels.
“Whether it is personal bests, medals or both, our swimmers are having a fantastic season.”
