Wick Academy under-18s make it three wins out of three
Wick Academy under-18s continued their positive start to the season with a third straight win as they thumped their Buckie Thistle counterparts 7-0 at Harmsworth Park on Sunday.
Wick started brightly as they played up the slope in the first half, dominating the ball, but a stuffy Buckie defence kept chances to a minimum. Finlay Marshall opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when he rifled a 30-yard shot into the bottom left corner.
Academy started the second half with a purpose and quickly doubled their lead when Matthew Aitkenhead smashed the ball into the net from just outside the box. The home side were now playing free-flowing football and they added a third when Lewis Mackillop burst through on goal and the ball ended up in the net with the aid of a deflection.
A fourth quickly followed when Lewis Gill drifted past two players and slotted home a super strike from outside the penalty area.
Mackillop added his second and Wick’s fifth with a well-worked goal. Bailey Morrison got the sixth with a fine finish from close range and Morrison scored his second, and Academy’s seventh, when he smashed the ball into the top corner from inside the box.
The victory leaves Wick on nine points from their opening three games in SHFL Under-18 North and looking forward to their next fixture away to Alness on Sunday.
Coach Derek Shearer said: “The boys played some great football again. Buckie made it difficult for us in the first half but once we got the second goal the confidence flowed through the team and they scored some terrific goals.”
