Young Scorries ‘set the bar high’ as they go top with 13-1 win
On a weekend that saw most football in the north falling victim to the weather, Wick Academy went storming to the top of SHFL Under 18 North.
The young Scorries were 13-1 winners against title rivals Forres Mechanics at Naver on Sunday, with nine of the Wick goals coming in the second half.
George Ewing found himself free just inside the 18-yard area to score the opener inside the first 10 minutes. There were chances at either end before Wick got a second off the head of an unfortunate Forres defender following a corner.
Ewing netted his second of the game and Jayden Bremner got on the scoresheet before the interval.
Forres grabbed one back on the stroke of half-time when Jake Newlands cut in from the right and fired the ball low past Jack Ross.
Any sense of renewed optimism from the Can-Cans soon disappeared after the restart.
Kyran Alexander forced the ball home from a goal-line scramble at a corner before Bremner netted his second. John Hooker crossed for Owen Bain to net number seven, then substitute Ben Durrand scored from a similar angle.
Steven Esson came off the bench and just about managed to tap home at the near post following a corner. Ewing and Bremner each completed a hat-trick before Ewing added a fourth for himself.
Durrand got his second to round off the scoring.
Coach Derek Shearer said: “We started the game brightly and created a few chances before George put us in front.
“Forres had several chances to equalise so was nice to go in at half time 4-1 up.
“Even at half-time I felt Forres were capable of causing us problems and getting back in the game, so we discussed how we wanted to approach the second half.
“Two early goals relaxed us and we went on to play some sensational football. Some of the goals we scored were out of this world.
“We’ve had games this season where we’ve had a brilliant 50 or 60 minutes but this is the first time we’ve been brilliant for 90.
“I can’t praise the lads highly enough. We’ve set the bar high and now need to try and keep up the standard.”
