Wick and Thurso members take Navcommsta honours at Reay
Reay hosted the ladies’ Navcommsta Open on Saturday with golfers from all over the county involved in the action.
It proved to be a fruitful day for Wick Golf Club member Hannah McLean, who won the overall handicap prize following an impressive round of 94 for nett 68.
A steady performance saw Fiona McLeod of Thurso take second place on nett 69, while a birdie at the fifth helped her clubmate Lyndsay Stott finish third on nett 70.
A superb hat-trick of birdies at the second, 15th and 17th holes helped Laura Durrand of Thurso win the scratch prize with a fine score of 77, with her daughter Emma having to settle for second place after a solid round of 84.
Pauline Craig won the Reay ladies’ 3 Club competition after a fine round of 96 for nett 76. Julie Minchin and Helen Gisbey completed the podium places, finishing second and third respectively.
In the latest North Point Distillery Senior Stableford action, a steady round which included 10 pars helped Ian Ross to victory on 39 points. A fine round of 87 saw David R Craig take second place on 34 points, a tally matched by Stuart Greig whose score was boosted by birdies at the third and 17th holes.
On Sunday the men were competing in round one of the 36-hole Dunnett Cup. An excellent round of 76 saw Gavin Gunn take the lead on nett 66.
David Mackay, who birdied the 16th, leads the chasing pack on nett 67. He is joined on this tally by Pete McCartney, who birdied the ninth, and Cammie Ross, who birdied both the sixth and 14th.
There will still be all to play for in round two, scheduled for Sunday, May 18, with no fewer than 17 players within five shots of the leader.
This Saturday sees the club hosting the Ronnie Wallace Open, sponsored by Norbloc Construction, open to both ladies and gents. On Sunday the men will be in action in the Pilkington Cup.
